The Bloomfield Senior Citizens Center has been an active center since 1978. The center began primarily as a place for seniors to congregate and visit with a lunch meal included. From the beginning, the center has offered a daily meal to congregate and home-bound seniors in the Bloomfield area. This service was expanded to include San Juan County residents in the 1990's. The 1990's also brought about a new building for the seniors which included a recreation room with 3 pool tables and a ceramics room complete with kilns and glazes.
In 2003, with a new director on board, Encore Senior College classes were introduced at the center. The first class was a mixed-media art class that went over very well. Today the center still offers Encore classes but has expanded the repertoire to include Art, Spanish, Senior Fitness, Computer, and Water Aerobics classes. The menu has changed as well as the need for more nutritious and healthy meals has become a very important part of a continued active lifestyle for seniors.
In addition to providing a healthy meal and interesting activities for seniors, the center also conducts many fund raising endeavors throughout the year. These endeavors help to provide yearly scholarships for Encore classes for seniors as well as a $500.00 San Juan College scholarship for a graduating high school senior in Bloomfield every year. The center also provides utility help for Bloomfield seniors in the winter months, help for needy families at Christmas time, and supplements the food budget provided by the state.
Monetary donations for the Bloomfield Senior Center Meal Program are always welcome. Donations for the meal program go directly to food for the Home Delivery and In-house programs. We appreciate any monetary donations from the public, and we are now able to accept debit and credit card payments! Call the center to donate today.
Spare change jars are located at Ace Hardware, Panda Garden, Farmers Market, and DJ's Pizza.
