The Bloomfield Police Athletic League is a recreation-oriented juvenile crime prevention program that relies heavily upon athletics and recreational activities to create and cement the bond between the police officers and kids on the street.The Bloomfield Police Athletic League is based on the strong belief that children, if they are reached early enough, can develop a strong, positive attitude toward police officers in their journey through life towards the goal of adulthood and good citizenship.
HistoryNationally, PAL established on the east coast over 70 years ago with six chapters. Today there are over 300 PAL chapters. Bloomfield PAL chapter was established 19 years ago, in 1998, with flag football leagues in two Bloomfield middle schools. The program has grown over the years to include the annual events described within along with many others. The focus always being to provide recreational activities that bring at-risk youth and department officers together in a positive way.
FundingBloomfield PAL is funded through local grants and personal donations. We continue to find multiple funding sources to provide a wide variety of activities. If you are interested in donating time or resources to PAL, please contact the PAL President at (505) 632-6311.
Bike & Scooter Rodeo A one day no-cost experience to teach kids the "rules of the road". Helmets and t-shirts are given to each participant. Bloomfield Fire is on scene to repair tires. Bicycles or scooters are donated and given out as drawing prizes. 5K/10K Run & Walk This recreational run/walk is open to participants of all ages. With low entry fees, it's a healthy, inexpensive activity for the entire family. Junior Police Academy This week-long academy instructs "cadets", ranging in ages 10-16, in physical training, crime scene investigation, repelling, firearms safety (paint ball), and other similar police training. Outdoor Adventure Another week-long program aimed at teaching youth, between the ages of 12 to 16, wilderness survival. They are taught how to process drinking water, injury treatment, knot work, shelter building and many other skills. Halloween Carnival Insuring a safe place for children and families to trick-or-treat. The carnival provides a place to wear costumes, play games, visit a haunted house, and go on a hay ride. This is the largest event PAL holds every year. Block Party/Summer Jam A spring and summer event held at varying locations in Bloomfield that offers the neighborhood a chance to come out, visit and play some hoops.
